   "Malllamma" apne pati aur sasural ko chod kar kyon bhag rahi thi…kaha ja rahi thi…mallama ka bachpan abhav mein gujara woe k garib pariwar se thi…par khush thi…5 saal pahle malllama jab 15 ki thi…tab aam ladkiyon ki tarah wo bhi sapne dekha karti thi…use padh-likh kar kuchh banna tha…kaafi samjhdar aur honhar ladki thi…mallamma padhne mein awbal thi…isliye usne apne shchhol ko dost bana liya tha…

Fight back of a young girl, who is forced into child marriage at 15 years of age to a man of 30. Mentally and physically abused by her husband and in laws…Mallama escapes their clutches only to be caught and presented before the village panchayat. As against her in laws belief Mallama rebels in the Panchayat accusing her in laws

for her condition and decision. Gradually, she won many hearts amongst the village girls, whom she enlightened against child marriage. She became a big phenomenon as media took her up as an exemplary figure, who stood up against the backward social norms and also empowered many young girls to do the same.


Mallama’s story is not just about her struggle but about her determination to stand for her rights, to fight against harassment, to beat tainted social norms and to enlighten people against child marriage. Mallama is an icon by herself…at a very young age she proved that only one person is required to tread a new path…the rest follow.


Mallama’s story qualifies to be a top 100 story as it exemplifies leadership and determination to fight back against a powerful social norm for a girl so young that she could have been easily curbed and threatened. She surely, proves herself to be a hero.

Mallamma, a 15-year-old girl from Andhra Pradesh’s small village
Muddanageri; is a happy go lucky girl from a very poor family. She likes to live each moment of her life joyfully. She has just started discovering the world and to know the things around her. She was so great in studies, so she used to like to attend the school everyday as spending time with her friends was also her favorite time pass.

Once in the afternoon in August, she backed from school after completing her routine. She was totally unaware that what she is going to hear now will destroy her happy-go-lucky life completely. When Mallamma returned home, her mother served her food. Today she was served with her favorite food. She was very happy to have that food but after having the food what she got to hear from her parents had totally spoiled the taste of food she just ate.

She was told that her marriage is fixed and within a week she will be a marriedgirl. Mallamma opposed strongly to her parents and completely denied for the marriage. She said, "I want to complete my school and live my life, please don't ruin my life by getting me married at this early when I am just 15".

Mallamma's mother yashomi was little worried with her reply but her father Ayyamma warned her that she won't go to school from now on and she has to marry with the man they have fixed her marriage.

Everyday Mallamma was threatened by her father while her mother was trying to make her understand calmly. But as the fights between Mallamma and father was not stopping, Yashomi said to Mallamma that if she doesn't get ready for marriage, she will suicide.

after a week, at 15, Mallamma was married off against her will. Her husband was double of her age. Initially, after marriage when her husband went close to her for sex, she strongly managed to refuse him. But after 2 days, her husband Mayanka forced her to have sex with her.

Physically and mentally Mallamma was not prepare for any kind of physical relationship with husband but she was helpless in front his forceful approach.

Later her husband pestered her to have a child but she resisted. But later, she gave in. Mallamma’s first child did not live for long. She then gave birth to two more children, neither of whom survived. Severe health complications followed, which resulted in a hysterectomy. Mallamma can never become a mother now.

Mallamma started falling ill day by day. Everyday forceful sex by husband making her physically and mentally weak.

Depressing through all this, Mallamma has now decided to stand for herself. She decided to fight against everyone who made her victim of Child Bride.

Once upon a day when her all in-laws were having dinner at home, she came in front of them and said it very bravely that she don't want live in their house and also want a divorce withMayanka. The entire family along with husband were extremely shocked. Her father-in-law Punnaswami told her that her wish will never get fulfill, she would neither get divorce nor she is allowed to leave the house. Punnaswami was afraid with his social image to get ruined if Mallamma does anything of what she has just said.

Mallamma's insecure husband and father-in-law then once locked Mallamma in a dark room where there was no light and no facilities available. They also started a physical torture with her and forced her to be agreed to live happily with them. Meanwhile her husband also does sex with her.

Mallamma was mentally and physically broken totally. Fortunately she got one chance to run away from the house, she gathered all the confidence and courage and she ran away from the house. She then approached a women helping organization where Shitala Devi, one of the activist of that NGO, helped her.

Meanwhile, when Mallamma's in-laws found that she has ran away from the house, they started hunting her but they didn't complained at police station as they feared of social image. After a week they were succeed in finding Mallamma. They again forced her to come her along with them but she refused and all the activist of NGO helped her.

Mallamma's in-laws then approached the Panchayat against Mallamma and the NGO. The in-laws thought that Mallamma won't be able to say anything in front of Panchayat and she will have come with them. But when Mallamma confidently appeared in front of Panchayat, she told everyone, everything what she has gone through. She blamed the husband and father-in-law for the physical and mental torture. She also demanded the divorce in Panchayat.

Hearing her story and looking her condition, the Panchayat given the decision in favor of her. But the Panchayat also request her to again join the family but Mallamma refused it.

Now the matter has became a pride issue for Mallamma's in-laws. They refused to give divorce and everyday tried to get Mallamma back to house by any illegal and inhuman way possible.

But this time Mallamma didn't give up. Looking her fight for justice many young girl joined her and supported her openly. Mallamma has now started putting pressure on in-laws for divorce. She used to make protest out of their house with her supporters.
                                                        
Meanwhile Mallamma has also started fighting for many such girls who were becoming victim of childmarriage. She made a group of 15 women and girls and teach them how to stop child marriages. Mallamma personally used to visit the families who were trying to get their girls married before they are 18's or even against their will. Sometime she also used to make a police complaint on her own against the families as the child marriages is now a crime in Indian law.

Mallamma's movement has now been noticed by Media as well. So as now Mallamma was becoming a strong personality in the village, many people started following her; Mallamma's in-laws were helpless. They have agreed upon giving divorce. After a few legal formalities Mallamma got a divorce.

Now she has started her movement with full force, her awareness program in village started showing impact. There was a survey conducted by the collector of a district. The survey said that because of Mallamma's movement the child marriage ratio has down in the village by 50 to 60 percent. Even the domestic violence cases has decreased day by day.

Mallamma's group was increasing day by day as many women and girls were joining hands with Mallamma. She has stopped over 1400 child marriages in the district in one year. Her amazing contribution to the society was noticed by the collector of District.

Mallamma was honored with a special award for her excellent intiative and contribution for society's betterment. She is now a respected personality in the village.


Mallamma has also started an employment program for women which makes her and the other women financially and personally independent.
